The use of a thermal buffer is particularly necessary in the case of recuperative and coupled processes. In these processes, certain amounts of energy are emitted and needed on a time delay.
This method is used in cheese dairies, for example. Milk, for instance, is heated on one side and whey is cooled with a certain time delay. The thermal buffer ensures that the whey heats the milk, incidentally cooling itself.
