Sprinkler tank

Sprinkler tanks are fire-fighting water containers for fire-fighting  and sprinkler systems. Sprinkler tanks are 100 percent full all the time, so they have to be particularly robust and resistant since they’re constantly under maximum strain. Sprinkler tanks are connected to their buildings’ fire-fighting systems. These devices are particularly often seen in large companies, industry, department stores and shops. They can also be seen installed in high-rise buildings and underground car parks and are intended to prevent the spread of fire.

History of the sprinkler system

The first sprinkler systems were found in American weaving mills. Water pipes were attached to the ceiling through which water continually ran. The pipes had holes at equal distance from each other which were closed with a cover. There would be a piece of thread attached to the cover. If this thread was burned off, the holes in the pipes would be opened and the water would be able to flow out.

Modern sprinkler systems

The modern sprinkler system works somewhat differently but still needs an enormous amount of water pressure. The sprinkler heads on the ceilings of the rooms are covered with small glass bulbs. These bulbs contain a liquid which explodes when a great amount of heat is generated. If the bulb breaks, nozzles will open and water will be sprayed out of the pipes. To prevent the bulbs from bursting in particularly hot summer weather, the trigger temperature is usually 30 degrees above the normal room temperature.

In addition to the sprinkler system, an alarm system may also be installed. When the bulbs burst, a drop in pressure is registered and an alarm signal is sent to the fire service or the central fire alarm system.

Sprinkler systems in cold areas

The pipes are not continually filled with water if the sprinkler system is in an area where there is a risk of frost. When a sprinkler head triggers an alarm, the drying system is first filled with water.

Due to the constant pressure acting on the pipes and tank, this sprinkler head needs to be very stable and reliable. So it’s important that regular inspections be carried out to ensure no water loss has been caused by any damages. If the water pressure in the sprinkler tank isn’t right, then the sprinkler system won’t function correctly.

To keep the pressure consistent at all times, the sprinkler tank is connected to a pump which keeps the system running.
