Foodstuff tanks are used both for storing and transporting foodstuffs. As the filling process is not as hazardous, they’re not subject to the regulations that tanks containing toxic substances are. However, certain hygiene guidelines must be observed in the case of foodstuff tanks. The foodstuffs may not come into contact with other substances or contaminants.
Foodstuff tanks are used in various industries.

Foodstuff tanks in the milk industry
In milk production, foodstuff tanks are not just cooling tanks but simultaneously transport tanks, as the milk must be transported from the farm and remain cool upon arriving at the nearest dairy. Milk is a very sensitive primary product, particularly because when it comes fresh from the farmer it’s raw milk. To prevent the milk turning sour or becoming contaminated, it’s important to work in a quick and clean manner.
Tanks for beer and wine production
The process is similar for foodstuff tanks that are used in beer brewing and wine production. Such production also involves processing foodstuffs, so cleanliness is essential. In the case of beer brewing and wine fermentation, the foodstuff tank also serves as a storage and anaerobic digestion tank.
Other types of foodstuff tanks
Foodstuff tanks must therefore satisfy different requirements depending on where and how they will be used. For example, in grain storage, a foodstuff tank must be completely dry and must not allow any moisture to enter it. Otherwise, the entire contents may perish.
Cleaning foodstuff tanks
As foodstuffs are sensitive substances which need to be stored and transported hygienically, the tanks must be cleaned to that effect. A foodstuff tank that is part of a production cycle, such as an anaerobic digestion tank, can be cleaned using the cleaning in process method. This allows all parts that belong to the same process to be cleaned without screwing them apart.
Milk tanks can also be cleaned from within. The nozzles must be fastened in place in the tank and can be connected to a water supply.
