Formation of whey
Whey is a by-product that forms in the production of cheese. It’s a greenish-yellow residual liquid that can be removed after milk has coagulated. Whey consists of 94% water and four to five percent lactose. There is pretty much no fat in the liquid. There are two different types of whey: sweet whey and sour whey. Sweet whey forms when milk is curdled with rennin in order to produce cheese. If the milk is broken down by lactobacilli, sour whey will form.
Uses of whey
Today, whey is frequently used in pig farming. But it’s still also a popular product in foodstuff production. For instance, ricotta is made from sweet whey. Drink producers also use whey as a base for soft drinks. Weightlifters often consume whey protein in powder form for muscle growth, as it’s easily and quickly absorbed by the body. The powder is also used in bakeries and in producing convenience foods.
Just like other foodstuff tanks, whey tanks must fulfil hygiene standards.
